Industry Code: 42113
This is a supply and install industry that describes, typically, interior tile, and terrazzo and glazed porcelain or ceramic work. This finishing is used in lobbies, on walls, floors and in swimming pools and washrooms.
Operation Details:
Tile and terrazzo are often used in heavy pedestrian traffic areas in plants, institutions, and commercial and public buildings. Terrazzo is a mixture of marble chips in an epoxy substance and spread over a concrete floor or subfloor.
Tile installation requires a prepared or roughed surface, glue is applied to the surface, the tile is set in place, and grout applied between the tiles. Tiles are often cut with a small cutter to allow for a better fit. Employers may use small mixers, scaffolding, and tile cutters.
The supply, fabrication and installation of natural and engineered stone (eg. granite, marble, quartz, Corian) products used primarily for interior countertops, backsplashes, fireplaces, etc. is also included. Employers typically have an inventory of stone slabs and may use cranes, laser templators, cutting/polishing machines and hand tools throughout the fabrication and installation process.
This industry may employ store front sales, design/technical staff, estimators, office/administrative staff, tile setters, labourers and delivery.
All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.
