Operation Details:

Painting is predominantly an interior activity, as is applying wallpaper, with exterior painting done only in warmer months. Surface preparation may include sanding, scraping, taping, and patching. In some commercial exterior projects, it is more expedient and efficient to sandblast an area and, when done in conjunction with the painting contract, is part of this industry.

Equipment and materials can include brushes, rollers, paint, varnish, wallpaper, sprayers, mixers, tarps, tapes, ladders. The occupational mix tends to be made up of painters/apprentices, laborers, sales/estimators, interior designers, and office/administration staff.

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:

Spraying cleaning solutions on ceilings is also part of this industry, unless performed as part of an overall janitorial contract. Texturing ceilings is part of this industry unless conducted as part of an overall drywall construction project.

Painting or coating industrial tanks is usually for rustproofing or waterproofing and is classified in Industrial Coating Services, industry 42139. The application of non-slip coatings on decks, poolsides, etc., is classified in industry 42139. Coating of pipe or tanks in-shop is classified in industry 30407.
