Industry Code: 42109
This classification describes the sale and/or installation and service or repair of a wide range of heavy and large industrial machinery and equipment.
Operation Details:
Often, the equipment or machinery may be brought in from out of province. Components are typically pre-assembled prior to delivery at the job site. Final assembly and installation however, can require weeks or months to complete. Examples of the type of machinery or equipment installed, aligned, dismantled or moved include sawmill and pulpmill equipment, mining machinery (conveyor systems), stationary turbines and boilers, material handling equipment, communication towers, pumps, fans, etc. Heavy steel platforms, stairs and catwalks are often installed to allow access on and around the equipment or system.
In this industry, several companies may be involved in one project: one company could install a turbine; another company may install steel drums, condensors, piping, fans and duct work; in completing the installation project, another company may install conveyors.
Tall microwave radio-TV towers are installed by raising sections using a gin pole winch and fastening each section. Smaller towers are assembled and tipped upright into place using, typically, a crane or a cat with a winch.
Proper alignment of this equipment is critical to ensure optimum performance. Traditionally, alignment was done with handtools and measuring devices. Alignment is now done by laser, and this industry includes laser alignment of the equipment during installation and on service calls.
Businesses may utilize cranes, gin poles, winches, welders, hoists, scaffolding, hand and power tools, and may employ welders, pipefitters, iron workers, boiler makers, millwrights, equipment operators, laborers, sales/estimators, and office/administrative staff.
All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.
Underwriting Considerations:
Employers in this industry are also recognized for occasionally performing shutdown maintenance and retrofits on the equipment and systems described.
Complete plant shutdown is classified in industry 40400. Owners of commercial facilities, manufacturing processes and industrial plants recognize that maintenance of their equipment assets is a reality. Most inspection, repair, replacement, alteration and minor maintenance work can be done while the plant is in operation or "on line". However, there will come a time when a plant has to undergo a scheduled process outage for the major maintenance work. This outage is referred to as a "plant shutdown". A major scheduled outage or "plant shutdown" is an opportunity to make significant design changes in piping, equipment, building and structures and to update critical job procedures.
Millwrights are a common trade in this industry. Construction millwrights and industrial mechanics install, maintain, troubleshoot and repair stationary industrial machinery and equipment. Construction millwrights are employed by millwrighting contractors. Industrial mechanics are employed in manufacturing plants, utilities and other industrial environments.
Heavy duty mechanics specializing in on-site servicing of stationary or mobile diesel engines are classified in industry 62201.
Businesses that design, engineer, manufacture, install and service large processing and/or compressor systems for gas plants are classified in industry 62304. Employers who sell stationary equipment such as vaults, laundry and janitorial equipment, which merely involves delivery and drop off of the product, is classified in industry 62302.
Businesses that erect power line towers and power lines or power line construction or removal are classified in industry 40901.
