This classification describes the lifting and placement of structural steel beams or girders, typically, as the structural support or 'frame' of a commercial, institutional or industrial construction project.

Operation Details:

Large cranes are used to lift the steel in place. Additional activities may include trucking the material to the jobsite, and the necessary bolting or welding the steel into place, occasionally at high elevations.

Employers may utilize cranes, trucks, welders, and handtools, with engineers, ironworkers, laborers, crane operators and drivers, along with sales/estimators, and office/administrative staff.

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.
