Sheet/Metal Structures - Erect

Industry Code: 42105

Compulsory

This is a supply and install industry and the type of steel building or structure represented can vary from pre-engineered self-framing storage sheds or grain bins to large steel-framed (rigid) warehouse/shop complexes.

Operation Details:

The contractor in this classification often has the exclusive rights to a brand-name type of product in that it is pre-engineered: all pieces for the building or structure - that of walls, roofs, windows, doors - are pre-engineered and made to fit (Side A goes to Side B, Side B goes to Side C...) requiring less labor and time to that involved in constructing a high-rise or industrial plant.

Often the business will be responsible for pouring concrete for a foundation, perhaps even clearing the site beforehand. A small crane may be required to lift larger sections and scaffolding may used to aid in the assembly. Metal cladding is a common exterior, and the building may be insulated; - plumbing and electrical may be hooked-up, and the outside grounds may be landscaped.

Businesses may stock the metal building/structure packages, sell the metal building/structure package, and set up the building package requiring, at times, excavation or clearing, and cranes, handtools, trucks, and scaffolding. Worker types may vary from ironworkers, laborers, technical staff, sales/estimators, designers, engineers, office/administrative staff. Some on site modifications may be done to 'customize' the building for the customer.

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:

Erecting wood-framed structures with a metal cladding exterior (like farm equipment shelters) is in this industry.

Often, employers maintain a fabrication shop for the design and manufacture of their own steel building/structure packages. The manufacturing activity is described under Steel Fabrication (industry 30100). Business that only install metal cladding are classified in industry 42151.
