This is a supply and install industry that describes brick/masonry contracting. In addition, this industry will include the selling and installation of paving stone which serves the landscaping market most often in residential and commercial applications.

Operation Details:

This industry describes masonry work utilizing bricks, concrete blocks, precast stone fascia, marble or glass blocks and a mortar/cement bonding material. The construction application of this is most often conducted on building facades, walls, exteriors, entranceways and lobbies, fireplaces, etc.

Brick and masonry work involves cutting to size, placing and, with a trowel, applying mortar between pieces for bonding.

Typical equipment can include mixers, trowels, scaffolding, cutting wheels, handtools, forklift, and trucks, and may employ brick/masonry trades, labourers, sales/estimators, and office/administrative staff.

The paving stone activities will include design and layout work, site preparation, providing a sand base and leveling. Blocks and stone and patio bricks may be cut or trimmed and stones are tamped into place. This is commonly found for patios, pathways and driveways.

Typical equipment used for these activities include use of a bobcat, gardening-type tools, tamper, stone-cutters and employ stone-layers, laborers, designers, sales/estimators, office/administrative staff.

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:

This industry includes placement of precast steps for houses or mobile homes.

Businesses that sell and/or install ceramic tile, granite, marble, quartz, etc. are classified in Industry 42113 - Tile/Terrazzo - Sales/Install when it is generally an interior activity. When patios and sidewalks are done in conjunction with a major or complete landscaping project, it will be classified in Industry 2100 - Landscaping.

Businesses in this industry may also feature sales/installation of styrofoam type blocks which are used as forms. These blocks are left in place after the concrete is poured and serve as an insulator. When this activity is ancillary to the main activity of laying sidewalk blocks, flagstone or paving stones, it is considered part of this industry.

However, if the sales/installation of the styrofoam blocks is the majority of the operations, the total business is classified in Industry 42104 - Concrete Construction.
