Contracts can involve interior or exterior work or both and often involve carpentry or rough carpentry activities. Employers in this industry will generally have direct hire of tradesman and labourers, however may engage the services of subcontractors for the completion of various projects.

Underwriting Considerations:
* GENERAL CONTRACTOR: The primary contractor for completion of an entire structure, including all site preparation and structural work along with all exterior and interior finishing. A general contractor will oversee and be responsible for all the work performed on the site including work by sub contractors.
Employers conducting business as a general contractor for new residential construction and renovations are classified in Industry 40405. To qualify as a general contractor for residential renovations, the work must include structural enhancements that increase the square footage (additions) or change the floor plan by replacing load-bearing walls with engineered structural beams designed to create an open concept.
Employers providing general contracting services in addition to services that do not qualify as general contracting will have all operations classified in industry 40401 and will not be eligible for a separate industry classification for the general contracting.
Renovations, upgrades, improvement may be conducted in either a residential or commercial setting. Whether these services are offered to the residential or commercial marketplace or a combination of both, the business is appropriately classified in industry 40401.
Businesses that provide a specific construction trade service will be classified in the appropriate trade category e.g. Painting (Industry 42111), Drywalling (Industry 42135), Framing (Industry 42143), Cribbing (Industry 42104). Employers engaged in offering more than one construction trade service are not eligible for separate industry classifications for each trade activity being conducted and are classified in Industry 40401, except as noted below.
Contractors providing services primarily related to exterior renovation or finishing work, including any combination of siding, eavestroughing, fascia, soffits or roofing are classified in Rate Group 423500 in either industry 42151(Siding/ Eavestroughing) or industry 42118 (Roofing), whichever best describes the majority of work.
Generally businesses install, repair or maintain instrumentation and control systems. When these services are part of a contract, the entire operations are classified in the specific industry: mechanical instrumentation industry 42122; refrigeration/air conditioning in industry 89600; heating in industry 42117.
Companies in business solely for installation, repair and maintenance that do not extend into another industry identified above will have their operations classified in industry 42124. This includes pneumatic and all other instrumentation. Electrical contractors providing cabling/wiring services are included in this industry.
