This industry describes the manufacturing and/or erection/installation of wood, metal or plastic-type advertising signs and displays, typically outdoors for all segments of the marketplace.
Operation Details:
Some types of advertising displays may be found as free-standing signs (wood, steel, concrete base) upon entering cities or towns, or attached to buildings. Other types are those seen on bus benches, buses (inside and outside), bus shelters (poster type ads), exterior sidewalk awnings, and rental trailer type signs that are transported to the site and set up, etc. The more elaborate signs feature lamps and lighting for enhanced night display.
Businesses may use a variety of woodworking, metal, plastic, paper, painting and electrical processes of cutting, bending, shaping, etc., in creating the sign or advertising concept.
Employers may use computers, art equipment and supplies, warehouses, trucks, cranes/booms/pickers or manlifts, electrical equipment, handtools, and other similar and necessary manufacturing, erection and installation equipment. Businesses may employ graphic artists, creative writers, truck drivers, technical staff, labourers, sales/estimators and administrative staff. Electrical installation may be subcontracted out.
Underwriting Considerations:
Manufacturing banners, decals, advertising placards and similar promotional-type items and indoor signs of that type are classified in industry 28603. Cold air advertising balloons are part of industry 22101.
Businesses specializing in inserting advertising cards into casings on the inside and/or outside of buses are classified in industry 86201, Providing Window and Store Display Advertising Service, and must not include any manufacturing.
Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option
This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2009. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
