Fibreglass/Artificial Stone Products - Mfg

Industry Code: 38500

Compulsory

This industry covers the manufacture of fibreglass-reinforced products such as shower stalls, hot tubs, vanities, cabinets, tanks, piping. This industry also includes the manufacture of artificial marble and stone products such as sinks, fascia, paneling.

Operation Details:

The primary ingredients used in making fibreglass products are fibreglass, resins and chemicals, including additives which are blended in for drying, hardness and bonding requirements. These are mixed together into a liquid which is applied by spray, rollers, automatic machines or any combination of these.

Manufacturing artificial marble consists of combining polyester resin and dolomite dust with colouring agents. A catalyst is added to create the exothermic heat needed for the mixture to adhere together, which is then poured into molds and left to harden. Next it is cured and then polished for a shiny and smooth surface.

Similarly, artificial stone is produced by mixing a light aggregate concrete mix and colouring, pouring into a mold, and drying in an oven or on racks.

These businesses may fabricate their own molds, which is also included in this industry when in conjunction with manufacturing of the above products, which may involve carpentry and/or metal fabrication or other mold-making technologies/activities.

Underwriting Considerations:

This industry voted not to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2013. The industry will return to Standard Pricing and the cost relief levy will be added to the industry rate, as it is required fund cost relief.
