Chemical Products - Package/Distribute

Industry Code: 37902

Compulsory
Industry Custom Pricing - CR

This is an "end product" manufacturing classification for employers which manufacture industrial or consumer product strictly through a blending process.

Operation Details:

Employers will purchase ingredients/chemical compounds (usually petrochemicals) in bulk and proceed to mix or blend liquids and powders according to special formulae to produce a homogenous substance, usually in a liquid state.

The process requires storage tanks, mixing vats, agitators and may incorporate grinding machines or a certain amount of low heat to ensure proper mixing. Once the ingredients are blended they are drawn from the vats and packaged or containerized, by either an automated or manual process, for commercial distribution.

The manufacturing operations may be supported by laboratory analysis as research, as well as extensive warehousing and marketing operations. Businesses will often sell related products and equipment which they do not manufacture.

The list of products manufactured through a blending and packaging process is endless. Some of the more common products include: paints, liquid soaps, detergents, cleaning compounds, lubricating compounds, glazing and sealing compounds, cosmetics, printing ink, solvents (such as varsol/turpentine), curing agents, drilling mud, etc.

Some of the ingredients may be caustic, toxic, inflammable, or otherwise harmful to life and some precautions must be made to safeguard against the dangers. This industry includes the blending and mixing of substances that may contain radioactive properties - substances such as sand, iodine, cobalt beads and water (tritium).

Underwriting Considerations:

The sale of drilling mud is include in this industry when operations include blending and packaging. Sale only operations are classified in Oilfield Supply Stores (industry 62303).

Products in this industry may be sold wholesale, retail or distributed to industrial users. Operations will include warehousing and distribution activities as well as the sale of any related or complementary items not of the companies' own manufacture.

This industry should not be confused with industry 37801 (04.04) - Petrochemical Manufacturing, which induces molecular restructuring. The absence of process technology (chemical conversion) typified by pressure vessels, utilization of extreme temperatures/pressures and employment of steam-ticketed tradesman distinguishes the two industries. Petro chemical companies may do some end product manufacturing as an incidental activity.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2011. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
