Plastic Products/Metal Extrusion - Mfg

Industry Code: 37301

Compulsory
Industry Custom Pricing - CR

There is a diversity of plastic products manufactured in Alberta, with a wide range of plastic products made using various forming technologies of extrusion, forming, molding and expansion.

This industry includes the manufacture of metal/aluminum products only when using an extrusion process. Aluminum extruded product is most often sold and used by others for window and door frames.

Operation Details:

Generally, plastics from petrochemical manufacturers in the form of pellets, beads, liquid, powders or pre-formed sheets are converted to a pliable state through the use of heat or chemical reaction, and then formed into various shapes. Forming methods include injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, thermoforming, rotational molding, compression molding, expansion and casting.

In all plastic manufacturing processes, production is highly automated. After forming, the product may be subjected to a variety of finishing operations such as welding, adhesive bonding, machining, and surface decorating (painting, metalizing).

Finished products include film, bags, containers, pipe, pipe fittings, automotive parts, cups, insulation, foam, window and door frames, etc.

Plastic product manufacturers employ equipment operators, chemists, plant maintenance personnel, welders and machinists, in addition to management and administrative staff.

Metal extrusion involves a heating process resulting in the material being forced through a die under hydraulic pressure. The extruded lengths are stored on racks and cooled. These sections may then be cut to length and oven baked to relieve stress. If painting is required, then pieces are chemically treated, painted, baked, and packaged.

A shop may have heater/ovens, extruders, racks, fans, paint booth, chemicals, forklift, and trucks for delivery. Metal extrusion workers may include technical staff, sales/estimators, office/administrative staff.

Underwriting Considerations:

Products referred to as foam rubber or foam plastic, which are manufactured using petrochemicals and an expansion process, are included in this industry.

Businesses that manufacture fiberglass reinforced plastic products are classified in industry 38500, Fiberglass/Artificial Stone Products - Mfg.

The manufacture of secondary plastic products, as an extension of a petrochemical manufacturing business, would not require an additional classification and the entire operation would be classified under industry 37801, Petrochemical Mfg.

Some businesses manufacturing plastic products, obtain their plastic from local recycling depots or the public. When recycled plastic is used in production, the manufacturer may put the plastic through a variety of processes including sorting, cleaning, chopping or drying; to get the plastic to a useable form before the manufacturing process actually begins. These activities, when done in conjunction with the manufacturing process, are included in this classification.

Businesses which specialize in the collection, sorting and sale of recyclable plastic products are included under industry 27400, Recycle/Salvage/Reclaim - Waste.

Businesses that assemble complete wood/metal pedestrian doors and residential home-type windows with this extruded product are classified in industry 42121, Doors/Windows - Mfg/Install.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2012. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
