Oilfield/Industrial Hazardous Waste Management

Industry Code: 36502

Compulsory

This industry involves terminal or processing facilities that receive, treat, recycle or dispose of hazardous waste material and toxic chemicals produced from oilfield or industrial sources.

Operation Details:

Businesses in this industry receive hazardous and toxic waste from a variety of sources. Businesses then use various applications to treat waste materials to environmental standards for recycling or disposal.

Businesses which receive oilfield waste primarily from upstream sources can be designated by the Albert Energy Regulator as an approved site to handle and transfer or to treat and dispose. Treatment will generally involve the use of settling tanks and centrifuges to separate hydrocarbons from water and solids. Once treated to environmental standards, liquid waste can be disposed of through deep well injection or underground cavern storage. Solids will be transferred to a landfill site designated to handle oilfield waste.

Oilfield waste management facilities may be designated as custom treaters and are commonly referred to as crude oil separators. These facilities receive water and oil emulsion from well licenses and through centrifuge separation technology can recover the crude oil which can be then be sold for refining.

This industry is also used to classify businesses which recycle used oil and lubricants received from auto repair garages, oil change stations and lube shops. These facilities use an automated refining process to remove impurities and restore lubricants to a usable grade.

This industry also includes the treatment of toxic chemicals and waste from household, commercial and industrial use and includes the treatment of PCB’s, acids and biomedical waste. Treatment processes include high temperature incineration, chemical treatment and stabilization for disposal in engineered landfills.

All employers in this industry are members of Energy Safety Canada (ESC). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:

This industry covers employers with fixed plant locations. Generally these facilities are stand-alone sites. There can be circumstances where employers are contracted to oilsands or oil and gas producers to provide separation and treating services as part of larger processing operation. When equipment is connected directly into the processing facility on another site, it is classified in this industry.

Treating and separating services that are not part of a permanent site and are mobile in nature are classified in Industry 09927 - Mobile Oilfield and Industrial Waste Mgmt.

Industry 36502 will also cover the operation of landfills when done in conjunction with the treating of oilfield and industrial waste provided the landfill is designated exclusively for this purpose.

Industry 36502 is generally used for treatments and disposal and does not cover off site collection or recovery of waste or contaminants. If employers in this industry conduct such operations they would require a separate industry best describing the method of removal; for mobile equipment - 40604; for vacuum trucks - 06306; for mobile oilfield waste treatment services- 09927 and for mobile pressurized steam cleaning services – 09902.

Employers whose primary business is the treatment and disposal may also be involved in emergency clean up operation on jobsites or in repairing leaks. When incidental, such operations can be classified in this industry. Liquid spills are either sucked up into drums or wiped up by absorbent materials such as sawdust, rags, or industrial absorbents. These wastes are stored in drums in a warehouse indefinitely or until the contamination level has stabilized. Leaks are repaired by draining the liquid in the container below the leak and patching it externally if possible.
