Gypsum/Clay Products - Mfg

Industry Code: 34500

Compulsory
Industry Custom Pricing - CR

This industry covers the manufacture of plaster and gypsum board, and the lamination of similar building material. Also covered here is the manufacture of clay bricks, blocks and pellets, industrial ceramic and porcelain products, as well as the blending of potters' clay. This industry also includes businesses that screen, blend and/or package ready to use cement, and other sand and soil products, including mortar, tile grout, drywall compound, sand, and potting soil. This industry also covers retail operations by these manufacturers to sell their own (and related) products.

Operation Details:

Gypsum board manufacturing begins with gypsum rock, which is ground, dried, calcined, heated, and broken down into a find powder. The powder is blended with other materials to make plaster, which is bagged and sold. Gypsum powder is also mixed with pulped paper, water, and other additives before being pressed between paper sheeting, then dried and cut into various drywall sheet sizes.

Included here is the manufacture of similar building materials such as the lamination of adhesives to gyproc, rock, wool, and vinyl products, including baseboards and trims. The process involves material passed through rollers, with glue applied and pressed into place to form the finished product.

Clay brick and/or pellet manufacturing is included in this industry. Clay is composed primarily of silica, alumina and water. Clay is obtained via strip mining with earth moving equipment. Clay strip mining is included in this industry when in conjunction with clay manufacturing.

The manufacture of clay bricks requires mixing clay and fly ash with an assortment of stabilizing and hardening ingredients, with water and colour added for desired consistency and decorative appearance. The mixture is extruded through various brick dies producing different shapes and sizes, placed on trays and cured in a kiln at around 2,000 degrees F, cooled, and stacked for sale.

Clay pellets are manufactured for use as an alternative (and lighter) ingredient than sand in the manufacture of concrete blocks. Water is added to clay to form a thick mud which is extruded through screens and cut into cubes, kiln dried, and then ground into a powder ingredient for concrete block manufacturers (that are classified in Industry 34700).

Potters' clay is manufactured using bulk clays of varying properties (from different sites across the prairies), which are blended with a variety of ingredients and water, for use in the production of ceramic molds, greenware, and pottery.

Manufacturing of industrial ceramic and porcelain products is included here, which have certain electrical, thermal, and abrasion resistant properties, primarily used as liners to control abrasion or corrosion in industrial process equipment, or insulators for thermal and electrical equipment. Clay is mixed with various chemicals and blended with water in hoppers or slip tanks. The mixture is either poured or extruded into molds and cured in a kiln before being finished (sanding, machining, glazing, and further kiln drying).

For dry cement products, base ingredients such as refined cement, lime and calcium carbonate are mixed with sand and/or various additives for bonding, colouring, and curing properties. The product is bagged and shipped. Wet cement product undergoes much the same process, only water is added and the final product is packaged in pails or plastic lined boxes.

Sand purchase/resale, screening, and/or bagging businesses are also included here. Recovery and further processing of sand (washing, grading, drying, removing magnate and iron) is not allowed in this industry.

Operations that sell potting soil start with loam, which is loaded into sheds and covered with plastic sheeting, after which a pressurized gas bomb is placed under the sheet to sterilize the soil. The loam is then mixed with other additives such as perlite before being bagged, weighed, sealed, and packaged.

The sale of bulk and/or bagged woodchips and sawdust is included in this industry. Businesses will obtain kiln-dried shavings from sawmills, and wood chips are obtained screened or unscreened. Organic mulches can be made from chips and bark. Mulches can be dyed to provide decorative/enhanced ground cover.

The equipment includes conveyors/rollers, glue applicators, dryers, and forklifts. Process operators, forklift operators, labourers, shipper/receivers, sales staff, truck drivers, and administrative staff may be employed.

Underwriting Considerations:

Quarry operations involving sand and/or gravel are classified in Industry 40604, as are businesses predominantly involved in the sale of bulk landscaping supplies (gravel, shale, bark, decorative rock).

The processing and packaging of peat moss is classified in Industry 12304.

Refining and/or processing silica sand is classified in Industry 34101.

While the manufacture of industrial ceramic products is included here, manufacture and/or instruction on artistic or decorative ceramics know as greenware is classified in Industry 69903.

The manufacture of concrete products (patio stones, parking curbs, beams, manholes, bricks) is classified in Industry 34700, Mfg Concrete Products.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2010. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
