Industry Code: 33902
This industry is for the manufacturing and assembly of small electronic components including circuit boards and phone equipment.
Also included in this industry are businesses that assemble light fixtures and similar smaller items where a primary component of the assembly process is the wiring of the product
Operation Details:
A circuit board is a small piece of fiberglass resin that is copper cladded on one or both sides. The desired plan or pattern of the required electrical circuit is laminated onto the board. Small holes are drilled or punched at predetermined locations on the board. The board is dipped into a chemical solution which removes the copper cladding outside of the desired circuit pattern. The board is then dipped into a zinc solution that electroplates the remaining copper cladding. What remains is the desired electrical circuitry detailed by a network of connections on the board.
A circuit board contains all the necessary information to operate smaller electrical devices such as calculators, garage door openers, home satellite systems, technical measuring systems, universal product code (UPC) scanners, etc.
Businesses may design and manufacture circuit boards, place into a plastic shell, affix wiring, buttons and switches, and other features of phone/portable receivers. It is typically a high volume mass-production/assembly line type of operation, with numerous conveyors between departments, with great emphasis on quality control and testing.
There is a design aspect to this industry, as phone styles and features, and technology changes rapidly in a highly competitive and evolving market. As well, businesses typically operate a significant sales department to market their manufactured product locally, nationally and internationally.
Businesses may operate a retail sales area to display the various products available.
The manufacturing of light fixtures and similar smaller items involves a process of assembling and wiring the product using tools such as solder guns, air brushes, drill presses, jig saws and other hand tools.
An example of similar smaller items includes electric bug zappers and power protection products. The manufacture of electric bug zappers involves bolting a wire cage around ultra-violet tubes and wiring the product using hand tools. The power protection products (e.g. power bars) "clean" the electrical current to protect products connected to these power protection products from surges in current; the manufacture of these items involves using tools such as drill presses and hand tools such as soldering guns, air brushes and screwdrivers.
Underwriting Considerations:
This industry also includes the manufacture of small carbon brushes used in smaller electric motors in most electrical appliances (power drills, ceiling fans, etc.). The assembly of computer cables, computer parts, power bars/surge protectors (residential only), and other digital/electrical devices and components are included in this industry.
Some soldering is permitted, but there is no sheet metal forming, welding, or heavier fabrication activity in this industry.
Businesses which do metal forming and specialize in the manufacture of electrical panels are classified in industry 33602. Businesses involved in the fabrication of industrial electrical equipment using heavier gauge steel are classified in industry 33606, Manufacture of Industrial Electrical Equipment.
Operating a telephone communications system is classified in industry 54501.
Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option
This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2010. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
