This industry includes businesses which sell, install and/or service medical equipment used by the health services industry such as hospitals, medical and physiotherapy clinics, laboratories, etc. This industry also includes businesses which sell equipment and supplies to individuals to support daily living in their own home such as oxygen tanks, oxygen and respiratory therapy requirements.

Operation Details:

The equipment sold for institutional and clinical purposes can include respirators (breathing equipment), x-ray equipment, fibrillators, electronic heart monitoring equipment, intravenous equipment, dental equipment, physiotherapy equipment, etc.

The equipment sold for daily living support includes but is not limited to items such as: beds, stair lifts, power lifts, vehicle lifts, wheel chair ramps, wheel chairs, scooters and personal living aids such walkers, canes, bath and shower bars, oxygen and oxygen tanks, etc. Businesses which sell/service/install medical equipment and supplies may employ nurses or respiratory therapists in providing the client with the expertise necessary to ensure the client obtains proper fitting and understands the proper usage of certain types of equipment and supplies.

Installation of the equipment requires the use of screw drivers, fasteners (i.e. Hilti fasteners), and scaffolding. Servicing of the equipment involves making adjustments and replacing faulty equipment.

Underwriting Considerations:

This industry is related specifically to medical and personal aid equipment and will include rentals of such items.

Pharmacies are classified under industry 68100, Drug Stores.

Businesses manufacturing oxygen which is classified in Industry 37801, will require an additional industry classification if also engaged in the operation of respiratory therapy outlets (Industry 33901).

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2012. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
