Industry Code: 33602
This industry describes the manufacture and assembly of sheet metal boxes or panels used to enclose or contain electrical wiring and/or electrical switching or monitoring components.
Operation Details:
The process starts with sheet metal cut to size. Pieces are passed through a punch or drill press where "plugs" are knocked out. These holes allow for wire and connectors to be passed through during assembly. The flat sheet metal pieces are further placed in a brake and formed into a box. The boxes may be spot welded to close the seams. Boxes may then be washed, rinsed and plated in a series of tanks, after which an enamel may be sprayed on. Using only hand tools, the panels or boxes may be assembled with circuit breakers, voltage regulators, and switching or monitoring circuit systems, etc.
The equipment used in this industry may include a brake, punch or drill press, spot welder, various hand tools and forklift; and staffing requirements may include brake operators, sheet metal mechanics, laborers, and sales and administrative staff.
Underwriting Considerations:
The boxes and panels in this industry are fabricated using sheet metal forming and only occasional spot welding activity. There is no ongoing welding activity, nor is there installation services provided in this industry.
Businesses which fabricate steel shells and heavier-duty breaker boxes, panels or steel cabinets for use in industrial and power plant applications are classified in industry 33606.
