Machining

Industry Code: 30801

Compulsory

Machining is an activity that may be performed in support of numerous industries. This industry is intended for those employers who provide a specific service of machining. This may involve specialty service applications such as automotive engine rebuilding, valve remanufacture and repair, well-head assembly or hydraulic servicing and repairing.

Operation Details:

Equipment used may include various types of numerically controlled and traditional lathes and vertical and horizontal boring mills, punches, presses, grinders with band saws, cut-off saws and welding machines with test benches. Steam cleaning and painting of the finished product is also undertaken.

Larger machining operations may provide designing and drafting services for specialized equipment or components. The process may also include welding, heat treating, hard chroming and coating of products, etc. The smaller shop differs only in that it is limited in size and ability to provide larger volumes of work.

The servicing and repairing of hydraulics (crimping, welding and machining of cylinders, etc) is part of this industry.

Underwriting Considerations:

Industry 30100, Steel Fabrication is intended for a heavier operation that involves cutting, welding, bolting etc. Steel Fabrication often results in structural applications whereas machining produces parts or components for a variety of systems.

Industry 89401, Welding is intended specifically for those operations who weld. Machining may be an incidental portion of a welding facility or operation. The focus, however, is in providing a welding service.

Rate Group History:

Effective January 1, 1996, the industry for automotive machining (30800) and for small tool manufacturing (30902) were consolidated into this industry. This consolidation formed part of the small industry project and considered the crossover of activities and responsibilities of the three former industries.

Also effective January 1, 1996, the industry for cleaning and coating of metal products (30403) joined this rate group. The cleaning and coating industry was too small to stand alone for rate setting, as well it displayed a crossover of functions with machining operations.
