Operation Details:

Sheet metal is considered to be aluminum or sheet steel, greater than 10 gauge in thickness (the higher the gauge number, the lighter the sheet steel is). Sheet metal shop will employ tinsmiths or sheet metal mechanics.

This process is primarily cutting, bending and forming by using cutters, brakes, crimpers, shears and rollers. Fabrication may require some riveting or very infrequent spot welding.

Underwriting Considerations:

Sheet metal shops do not install their product. These shops generally sell a product on a wholesale basis or manufacture a product to specification. Industry 42117, is intended specifically for those shops who fabricate and install HVAC systems which will include a heating or air conditioning unit along with duct work.

Industry 30100, Steel Fabrication, is intended for manufacturing operations using heavier sheet steel and steel fabricators will often employ welders and iron workers.
