Steel/Metal Fabrication

Industry Code: 30100

Compulsory
Industry Custom Pricing - ER

This industry includes material and product fabrication using sheet steel, aluminum, plate steel, ornamental iron, tubular steel or metal, and other miscellaneous types of coiled metals and corrugated steel.

Operation Details:

Processes can include welding, cutting, bending, bolting and riveting. Often, machine shop equipment is used to supplement the fabrication process. Product examples include, but are not limited to, pressure vessels, structural steel, ornamental railings and steel furniture, agricultural implements, trailers and truck bodies, culverts, drilling rigs, steel bins, racks and overhead steel doors.

Fabrication is conducted with equipment such as welders, shears, saws, cutting torches, brakes, lathes, punches and drill presses. Overhead cranes in the shop and/or yard are required to manoeuver materials and products. Workers include steel/iron workers, welders, machinists, millwrights, technical staff, designers, labourers, warehouse/yard staff, crane operators, drivers, sales/estimators, office and administrative staff.

A business that manufactures and installs automotive and/or industrial trailer hitches is included in this industry.

All employers in this industry are members of Manufacturers’ Health and Safety Association (MHSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Underwriting Considerations:

This classification allows for the delivery of the product, unloading at the site, and setting the product in place. Installation IS NOT included in this industry when on-site work requires any fabrication, assembly or erection. Steel fabricators engaged in erection or installation of product will require an additional classification for the on-site exposure. The erection of steel and installation is often contracted separately from the supply of product. Employers that exclusively erect steel, and do not fabricate or supply products, often bid on the erection of products supplied by the fabricator.

Businesses that primarily sell a welding service rather than fabricated products are classified in Welding, industry 89401.
