Ferrous Free Metal Foundries

Industry Code: 29700

Compulsory

This type of business uses non-ferrous metals (not containing elements of iron) such as brass, bronze, lead and aluminum in a casting process to manufacture products such as bushings, fittings, motor mounts, plant stands, ash trays, shelf supports, etc.

Operation Details:

The metal is melted in kettles in a natural gas furnace and the molten material is transferred by ladle to the mold. The molds are most often made of either metal or silica sand packed around a wooden pattern to make the desired casting. The completed casting is trimmed and ground down. The operation may also include a shop that completes any necessary machining, drilling, threading, etc.

Bushings, fittings, motor mounts, ash trays, plant stands, shelf supports, etc. are examples of the non-ferrous products that are made in this type of foundry.

The equipment used in this operation includes overhead cranes, kettles, furnaces, drill presses, lathes, pattern saws and sandblaster tumblers for removing sand from castings.

Underwriting Considerations:

In this type of foundry, the work and processes with non-ferrous metals (that melt at lower temperatures) and the types of product castings, are generally lighter and smaller than ferrous-type products from an iron and steel foundry in industry 29102.
