Industry Code: 29102
These foundries make castings and then pour molten iron or steel in these castings to form items such as manhole covers, boxcar wheels, mobile equipment parts such as bucket teeth, wire rope fittings, chains, etc.
Operation Details:
The making of a mold starts with a drawing or object from which a pattern is made of wood, metal or plastic. A sand and hardener mixture is poured over the pattern and hardens to form the mold.
Steel (usually scrap) is melted in an arc furnace (2700 degrees F.), removed by ladle (mechanically) and poured into the molds where it hardens. The mold is then removed and the sand buffed off. A finishing section then grinds and polishes the product. The overall process is quite labor intensive.
