This industry describes the manufacture of advertising and marketing concepts that are typically smaller indoor signs, displays, banners and decals.

Operation Details:

Often, sign work is designed, drawn out and hand painted by commercial artists. Wood, paper, plastic, metal and cloth are some materials used. As well, designs may be computer generated or company names, logos, or shapes may be cut out of adhesive vinyl or similar material. Other signs and decals are created by a silk screen process on paper, plastic, vinyl, cardboard and glass.

Businesses may use smaller saws, cutters, drill presses, paints and brushes, stencils, computers and handtools; and may employ sign painters, artists, technical staff, sales/estimators, and office/administration staff.

Underwriting Considerations:

These types of signs do not normally require installation. If installation is performed, it is infrequent and performed at ground level (no ladders) by one person using no more than a screwdriver and/or hammer. Outdoor and billboard advertising is classified in industry 39701. The manufacture and installation of business signage in shopping malls is considered outdoor advertising and classified in industry 39701.

The silk screening of clothing, hats, etc. only (not promotional items or signs) is classified in industry 24900 - Clothing/Leather Good - Mfg/Repair. The manufacturing of small promotional items such as coffee mugs, pens, etc., with or without company names or logos imprinted, is classified in industry 38200 - Jewelry - Mfg.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2009. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
