Industry Code: 27400
Waste management is reflective of society’s increased concern for and awareness of the environment. This classification includes the salvaging, recycling and reclaiming of items and materials such as bottles, glass, plastic, cans, cardboard, and paper. This industry typically describes the initial stage of the recycling process; materials are often sold for further use in manufacturing. This industry does not include salvage/recycling/reclaiming described elsewhere - see Underwriting Considerations.
Operation Details:
Activities may extend to collecting, baling, boxing, palletizing. As well, crushing, shredding and pulverizing of material may be conducted prior to transportation to a manufacturer. Paper and cardboard, for example, are sold to manufacturers for further processing into newsprint and roofing materials. Bottle depots send collected materials back to breweries and pop manufacturers to be cleaned and reused. Cans may be crushed for sale to steel plants or foundries.
Businesses may utilize conveyors, trucks, forklifts, trucks, hoppers, balers, shredders, baggers, and scales. Workers can include labourers, technical staff, equipment operators, drivers, estimators, and sales, office and administrative staff.
Underwriting Considerations:
Processing paper insulation is included in this industry because it is common for paper recyclers to shred paper and add fire retarding/proofing property/chemicals to the material. Reclaiming welding flux is also a part of this industry. This industry also includes ‘blue box’ programs, unless conducted as an extension of another business operation, such as garbage collection. Trucking of garbage as a contracted utility function is classified in industry 57901. Scrap metal and salvage dealers are classified in industry 62700. Building demolition contractors and salvage is classified in industry 40604. Automobile wreckers are classified in industry 62701. Toxic waste recovery and treatment is classified in industry 36502.
