Asphalt Roofing Products - Mfg

Industry Code: 27200

Compulsory

Businesses in this industry typically manufacture products such as asphalt shingles, roll roofing material, tar paper and roofing tar.

Operation Details:

This manufacturing process typically incorporates a recycling facility to receive and sort all types of papers. The paper is chemically treated and put through a pulp type process to produce huge rolls of coarse paper.

These rolls are then transferred to the next stage where they are unwound and fed through rollers. The paper goes through a series of hot asphalt baths, passing over rollers on hangers between each bath to allow partial cooling. The thickness of the bath varies to allow firstly soaking, then build up of thickness. The product at this point can be cut and rolled into tar paper.

Other paper is carried through a thin oil bath after which fine coloured granite granules are spread over top. It is carried further through rollers, another bath and more granules are spread on top. The resulting product may be rolled up for roll roofing or conveyed to a machine that stamps out shingles, after which the product is bundled and carted off for storage. In most cases, it is an automated manufacturing process.

Underwriting Considerations:

In a separate process, but part of this industry, asphalts are blended and poured into pails, kegs or cans for use as roofing tars. Businessses in this industry will sell wholesale, retail and direct to contractors, and may sell complimentary roofing supplies and accessories.
