Furniture - Mfg/Repair

Industry Code: 26101

Compulsory
Industry Custom Pricing - CR

This industry covers the manufacture and repair of upholstered furniture including mattresses, as well as the repair and refinishing of wood furniture.

Upholstered furniture can be sofas or chairs of all descriptions and mattresses can include box spring, foam and futon.

Wood furniture includes tables, chairs, pianos, etc.

Operation Details:

The process of manufacturing upholsered furniture begins with building a wooden frame using saws, hand tools, sanders, etc. The next steps involve adding springs, padding and fabric to complete the product. The cutting and sewing of fabric is an integral part of the manufacturing. Wood finishing may also be necessary for wood accessories and attachments.

Futons are soft pliable cushions made from layers of cotton batting and foam encased in a cotton cover. The frames are typically wooden.

Also included in this industry are repairs or replacement of worn or damaged coverings such as vinyl or fabric, replacing padding and stuffing, in some cases repairing damaged frames, replacing springs, etc. Included here are auto upholstering businesses that repair or improve the upholstery in automobiles and in some cases branch off into custom work for vans, etc.

Businesses may also repair and refinish any type of wood furniture like chairs, tables, pianos, cabinets, etc. The furniture is usually older and requires restoration or repairs. Surfaces may be sanded, have compounds or fillers added, painted or stained, and polished.

The process in refinishing furniture may start by dismantling the piece of furniture and soaking each piece in an alcohol-based stripper. After a specified time the pieces are removed and air dried. Once the piece is dry it is lightly sanded, stained, repairs performed, reassembled and then restained or oiled. Any major repairs (lathe work, etc.) are usually subcontracted out.

The equipment may include power bench saws, assorted woodworking hand tools, sanders, cutters, sewing machines, drills, staplers, industrial sergers and assorted paintings and stripping equipment.

Underwriting Considerations:

Employers in this industry may have product display areas and offer an interior design service, manufacturing or supplying drapes and window coverings to match furniture as well as selling furniture and related decorating accessories which are not of their own manufacture. Such operations conducted by a manufacturer are not eligible for a separate classification from the manufacturing operations.

Employers whose primary business is the refinishing of furniture, may purchase new, unassembled furniture components (chairs, dinette suites, etc.) and complete the assembly and finishing work. Providing this is occasional and incidental, it would be included in this industry. When the assembly and finishing is the primary business, or if wookworking is involved in manufacturing components for new furniture, the business would be classified in industry 24501, Carpentry.

Businesses which only assemble furniture are also classified in industry 25401.
