Industry Code: 25900
This industry covers businesses which perform the peeling and pointing of posts exclusive of other lumber milling operations.
Operation Details:
Posts of uniform length are fed into a machine that rotates them much the same as a lathe, at the same time peeling the bark off (called a post peeler). One end is then ground to a point using a post pointer. These operations are quite mechanized and use labour-type workers to operate the equipment. The posts are usually dip-treated following the peeling and pointing.
Underwriting Considerations:
The posts peeled and pointed in this industry are generally smaller and used by farmers, ranchers or acreage owners, although the peeling and treating of telephone poles are also included in this industry.
Also included in this classification is the administration of a mill's woodlands operations, but only when the mill itself is not actively logging their harvest area.
The peeling and pointing of posts done in conjunction with a sawmill operation, will be classified along with the sawmill in industry 25100.
This industry came under the Act on a compulsory basis effective January 1, 1976.
Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option
This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2010. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
