Operation Details:

Employers in this industry will operate from smaller wood working shops to large automated plant locations to manufacture wood products. Shop equipment could be very basic, limited to hand held power saws and table saws. On the other hand, facilities could also include computer controlled product handling and cutting equipment.

Manufacturing includes cutting wood to specifications, assembling and finishing the product - big and small. Activities include, but is not limited to: planing, sawing, cutting, tonguing, grooving, nailing, screwing, gluing, clamping, filling, sanding and staining or painting of product big or small. Examples of product include, but is not limited to, beams and custom lengths of lumber or sheets, cabinets, pallets, shuffleboards and pool tables, trusses. The industry also includes more involved manufacturing applications related to manufactured housing, holiday, tent and camper trailers with all attachments of chassis, windows, screens and doors; also truck boxes and portable wooden buildings.

This industry can include delivery and installation when installation is incidental to the employer's primary manufacturing activity.

This industry may include store front operations to sell related product and includes relevant personnel and delivery. A showroom or display area may exist to present sample products or catalogues for ideas.

Businesses may utilize saws, lathes, planers, glue machines, handtools, forklifts, trucks, and dust-collection equipment. A typical job mix may include carpenter-types, handymen, laborers, sales/estimators, office/administrative staff, draftspersons, warehouse workers, delivery drivers.

Underwriting Considerations:

Installation will be included in this industry when the installation requires minimal assembly at the installation site and the installation is basically setting the manufactured product in place like kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, office furniture, etc.

Finishing carpentry work when conducted as a seperate business and where work is conducted at a construction site is classified in Industry 42147.

This industry can include the manufacturing of wall sections and roof trusses where the employer is not involved or responsible for erection or construction. Where installation requires work at a site, other than the employer's own shop or plant facility to assemble, construct or erect structural components such as wall sections or roof trusses, all operations including shop activities will be classified in Industry 42143 - Framing. Such operations may be classified in Industry 40405 if the employer otherwise qualifies as a residential general contractor.

Businesses which only manufacture or assemble picture frames are classified in industry 39901; manufacturing of wood caskets and coffins only is classified in industry 39901; furniture refinishing only is classified in industry 26104; assembly and installation of pre-manufactured cabinets, when conducted as a separate business is classified in Industry 42133; countertop assembly and installation only is classified in industry 42133; manufacturing doors and windows is classified in industry 42121 or industry 30302, if overhead doors, both of which include installation.
