This industry describes sewing of heavier fabric and light metal fabrication activities in the manufacture of temporary/permanent shelters/structures for protection purposes and/or advertising concepts.
Operation Details:
Canvas, polyvinyl material or other synthetic-type fabric is cut to specifications and seams are sewn or heat welded to form both large and small product. If a frame is required, aluminum or steel tubing is cut, bent and welded to form. The final process is securing the fabric to the frame.
Examples of products manufactured in this classification includes tents, tarps, canopies, fabric awnings, hot/cold air balloons, and hang gliders. Canopies, awnings and balloons are popular for purposes for advertising, which allows for graphic designs and/or silk screening integrated into or on the product. Often, employers manufacturing canopies and awnings will also install and repair their product in the field. If backlighting is required, it is often contracted out.
Field erection, when part of the product manufacturing contract, is included and often requires a small crane or manlift or cherry picker mounted on a truck, or air pump in the case of a cold air balloon. This industry may include store front operations that may sell camping/survival gear and/or accessories, includes store personnel and delivery.
Equipment may include sewing machines, fabric cutters, metal cutters, handtools, cranes, trucks, and a worker mix of seamstress-type staff, technical staff, labourers, welders, sheet metal workers, sales/estimators, office/administrative staff, warehouse workers.

Businesses which sell and erect billboard and other outdoor advertising services are classified in industry 39701. Businesses which only erect/install commercial tents are also classified in industry 22101.
Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option
This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2009. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
