This industry consists of businesses which trim and/or remove trees, brush, weeds, etc. that may interfere with linear facilities such as pipelines, power lines, oil leases, plant sites, etc.

Operation Details:

Vegetation control is performed using a variety of techniques such as; hand slashing with power saws, mowing with brush mowers, trimming using all-terrain vehicles with manlifts and saws, and spraying herbicides using trucks or all-terrain vehicles (such spray operations are licensed through Alberta Environment). This activity may also be referred to as Industrial Vegetation Management.

Employers in this industry do not establish the right of way; they maintain and clear only. Associated with vegetation management is "consenting", where permission is requested from landowners to enter and perform necessary maintenance.

Employers will typically use chain saws, trimmers, applicators, trucks, all-terrain vehicles and manlifts. Workers may be comprised of horticulturists, technical staff, labourers, mechanics/repair staff, sales/estimators and office/administrative staff.

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives. Improved workplace safety can result in fewer claims and help lower premiums. A portion of premiums collected is allocated to the association to support these initiatives.

Residential and commercial fertilizer and weed control services only are described under Lawn Maintenance, industry 02103. Mowing lawns and trimming activities to sculpture residential or commercial shrubs is classified with Landscaping, industry 02100. The mowing of grass along roads or highways only, and exclusive land clearing activities, are classified in industry 40604.

Businesses in this industry may associate with the Industrial Vegetation Management Association (IVMA).

Rural Electrification Associations are classified in industry 57400, Utilities - Electric and Natural Gas.

Effective 1997, rate group 412401 for right of way maintenance and powerline construction activities, and rate group 016300 describing landscaping-type activities, were placed into rate group 421501.
