Animal Health Services

Industry Code: 02104

Compulsory/Exempt
Industry Custom Pricing - CR

This industry includes businesses often referred to as animal hospitals or veterinary clinics, which provide a wide range of animal health services for farm animals and domestic pets, large or small.

This classification also includes businesses that provide farrier services.

Artificial breeding services or businesses which produce, package and distribute cattle and swine semen are included in this industry. See Optional coverage and Underwriting Considerations for details.

Operation Details:

Compulsory:
The activities include examinations, vaccinations, prescriptions, surgery, hospitalization, research and boarding of animals. Veterinary, farrier and breeding services may involve field calls to the client's premises.

Animal hospitals often have kennels where they board convalescent animals and provide boarding services to anyone wishing to leave their animal.

Smiths who shoe horses, also known as farriers, will operate from mobile horse shoeing units which contain forges, anvils and hand tools. Forges are used mainly when special shoeing is required. The shoes are purchased primarily from retail outlets. Most shoeing is performed on the customer's premises or at the race track.

Optional:
Effective January 31, 2020, artificial breeding services became optional due to new farming legislation. When these services are the sole or primary activity of the business, farming/ranching coverage rules apply (ie. mandatory coverage for waged non-family workers, waged family members may be optional/mandatory depending on whether partners/shareholders are family members).

Employers with six or more waged non-family workers can choose to have their workplace insurance coverage under the Workers’ Compensation Act or through a private insurance provider. Employers are not required to have workplace insurance if they have five or fewer non-family workers, or hire workers for less than six consecutive months.

Underwriting Considerations:

From January 1, 2016 - January 30, 2020, artificial breeding services were compulsory due to farming legislation. When these services are the sole or primary activity of the business, farming/ranching coverage rules apply (ie. mandatory coverage for waged non-family workers, waged family members may be optional/mandatory depending on whether partners/shareholders are family members).

When businesses in this industry sell pet food and/or supplies, an additional industry classification is not necessary, as this secondary activity is considered to be incidental to the main business. Kennels and pet grooming salons are classified in Industry 02117 - Kennels/Pet Grooming.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2013. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
