Seed Cleaning Plants

Industry Code: 02101

Compulsory
Industry Custom Pricing - CR

Businesses in this classification clean seed grains such as wheat, barley, oats and other seeds such as rape, flax, mustard. Seed is cleaned to remove weed seeds and eliminate certain diseases and impurities. This industry includes municipal, county and privately owned facilities that take the farmers' grain, clean it and return the seed to the farmer.

Operation Details:

Effective seed cleaning is necessary to obtain quality seed that will increase farm production and provide a uniform product for industry. Seed cleaning and separation processes are by size, weight, length and surface texture.

Seed is typically trucked into the plant and off-loaded into storage bins or hoppers. The seed is then run through plant processing equipment such as scalpers, screens, separators, mills, and bagging machines. Chemical compounds may be added during the process to treat seed for disease, particularly fungus. The cleaned and sorted seed is then available for pick-up by the same farming customer.

Businesses will have storage bins or hoppers, loading and unloading capabilities, various cleaning and separating machinery and equipment, and will conduct repair and maintenance on the same equipment and facilities. Staffing requirements include seed plant personnel for loading/unloading, operating and servicing machinery and equipment, and quality control and administrative staff.

Underwriting Considerations:

This industry also includes mobile seed cleaning operations and, while the amount of seed that can be cleaned is low, mobile seed cleaning can save time for a farmer, especially during the planting season. Seed cleaning by grain elevators or food processors is deemed incidental to those businesses.
