Landscaping

Industry Code: 02100

Compulsory

Landscaping activities are plant, yard and grounds maintenance and enhancement activities most often conducted at or around residential or commercial building sites.

This industry also includes the supply and installation of irrigation systems and fences.

Operation Details:

Landscaping may include design and layout, seeding and planting trees, shrubs, flowers, cutting and maintaining the grass, gardens and grounds. Landscaping may also include some subordinate harder landscape construction such as building a deck, a fence, or smaller concrete edging activity.

Equipment may include lawn mowers, trimmers, bobcats, trucks, fertilizer spreaders, tampers, gardening-type tools. The occupational mix may be comprised of labourers, horticulturists, sales/estimators, office/administration staff, equipment operators, landscape designers. Employers may operate a store front operation to sell related landscaping/gardening items and materials.

The supply and install of irrigation systems will be for residential yards, commercial grounds and golf courses.

The installation requires a trench to be dug using a shovel or ditch witch-type of trenching unit. Pipe, most often plastic, is placed in the ditch, sprinkler heads are attached at strategic intervals, it is hooked up to an existing water supply and the trench is backfilled.

Typical equipment may include "ditch witch", gardening-type handtools and plastic cutters/glue. Staff can include plumbers, landscapers, labourers, sales/estimators and office/administration staff.

The supply and install of fences includes tubular metal, chain link, barbed wire, wood and plastic (PVC) fencing in all sectors.

The installation involves digging post holes, usually by auger (handheld and mechanical) and then ready-mix cement is prepared and tamped into the holes to secure the post. Chain link or barbed wire is stretched or pulled into place by a winch or a puller and fastened with "U" shaped metal staples. Wood fence boards are nailed or screwed into place and some onsite cutting, staining or painting may be required. Some minor in-shop fabrication to hinges, latches, gates and with link weaving machines is permitted in the industry.

Typical equipment used for these activities includes post-hole auger, bobcats, mixers, hand tools, winch, saws and steel/wire cutters. Staff can include labourers, technical staff, sales/estimators, drivers and office/administrative.

All employers in this industry are members of the Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA). Safety associations represent the interests of employers and promote workplace safety through education and other initiatives.
