Tree/Shrub Nurseries

Industry Code: 01904

Compulsory
Industry Custom Pricing - CR

Tree and shrub nurseries grow, care for and sell trees and shrubs.

Operation Details:

Tree/shrub nurseries can accommodate large numbers of trees/shrubs through their growth, care and eventual sale and delivery. Activities include planting, fertilizing, watering, trimming and transplanting at the nursery location.

Nurseries may own their own tree-mover, or subcontract this service, for delivery. A tree/shrub nursery may operate a facility for marketing to sell related or other gardening or landscape-type materials such as fertilizers, bagged soil, insecticides, potted plants, bedding plants. This industry includes store front personnel and delivery.

Employers may utilize mobile equipment, farm-type tractors/spreaders, and trucks to 'plant' the trees, and may maintain a store-front operation to sell related landscaping/gardening accessories. Workers employed may be horticulturists, farm-hand labourers, sales/estimators, and office/administration.

Underwriting Considerations:

Grain or livestock farms that operate custom tree growing services require this industry classification when workers are devoted to the operation; this activity is not a traditional farming activity. A nursery run in conjunction with a landscaping operation is considered subordinate to the landscaping operation. Nurseries may have a greenhouse to start seedlings for their tree farm, merely transplanting them as required. A business that sells seedlings out of its greenhouse, with no other business activities or operations, is classified in Greenhouses, industry 01901. Employers may associate with the Landscape Alberta Nursery Trades Association (LANTA).

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2010. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
