Malt - Mfg

Industry Code: 13900

Compulsory
Industry Custom Pricing - CR

This industry consists of businesses who convert the reserve food material in barley kernels to a soluble state, known as malt, which is used by brewers in the manufacturing of beer.

Operation Details:

The barley is cleaned, graded and separated, transferred to large hoppers and submerged in water for two days until the moisture content reaches a desired level.

This wet barley is transferred to a germinating compartment that accommodates up to 6,000 bushels. Saturated air is introduced to maintain moisture and temperature while the barley germinates, in the same way as the growing process. This converts the protein, etc., into a soluble form. When sprouts start to form, the "green" malt is transferred to a kiln where the temperature is slowly raised, until the malt is dry (a period of roughly two days).

After the malt is dried, it is dropped into hoppers and transferred into a storage compartment where it matures for six weeks.

Finally, the malt is blended, cleaned and shipped in sacks or hopper cars to brewers.

Underwriting Considerations:

Malt is used exclusively in the brewing of beer through a fermentation process. The trucking of malt to a rail loading station or directly to the brewery forms part of this industry.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2009. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
