Food Processing - Miscellaneous

Industry Code: 13100

Compulsory
Industry Custom Pricing - CR

This industry covers the processing and packaging of candy and other miscellaneous food products which are not elsewhere classified.

Operation Details:

This industry covers a diverse group of employers and food products using a wide range of food processing and packaging equipment. It can involve a very automated or labour intensive process.

Raw materials are processed to produce miscellaneous food products such as gravy and soup bases, seasonings, fillers and coatings, popsicles, packaged egg product, single serving plastic packaged items such as plum/soya/mustard/peanut butter/jam, syrup toppings, honey, popcorn, tea and coffee, perogies, cabbage rolls, pizza/pie shells, taco sauces, tomato pastes and other similar miscellaneous and edible products.

Products may simply be packaged or there may be some processing prior to packaging. Processing can include some mixing, blending, grinding and even cooking or baking.

In addition to the products listed above, this industry also includes:
- powdering and pickling of eggs
- grinding, blending and/or packaging of coffee and tea
- roasting and flavouring of beans
- flavouring and packaging of sunflower seeds
- roasting, grinding, flavouring and packaging of nuts
- processing and packaging of dried fruit.

Candy manufacturers, whether they sell wholesale or retail over the counter, are classified in this industry. The equipment used consists of large mixers, cookers, extruders, various utensils and may include long cooling tunnels. Candy may be packaged by hand or through the use of automated packaging machines.

Businesses involved in egg grading as a separate and distinct operation are also classified in this industry.

Egg grading stations get most of their eggs from other independent sources (i.e. egg producing farmers) and either pick them up or have them shipped. Prior to resale there are four basic operations: to wash, grade, size and package the eggs.

As the eggs are received, they are placed by hand on a conveyor, taken through a washing machine, automatically dried, and run across a bank of lights or a scanner where they are checked for flaws like blood spots, cracks, etc., (known as candling). The eggs pass through scales where they are sized, usually into five different sizes: extra large, large, medium, small and pee wee. They continue down the conveyor into a packing head that aligns and packs the eggs into cartons or flats. The final step is packing by hand in cases of 30 dozen and palletizing for shipment.

These businesses are usually highly automated and hire workers such as egg graders, assembly line workers, truck drivers and office/administrative staff.

Underwriting Considerations:

The list of food processing operations in this industry is not exhaustive; however, businesses should not be classified in this industry until it is determined that the business is not appropriately included in some other food processing category. Businesses engaged in the manufacturing of non-alcoholic beverages, alcoholic beverages, dairy products or meat products are not classified in this industry.

Businesses in this industry may have extensive wholesaling, warehousing and distribution operations and may sell complementary items not of their own manufacture. Such activities are part of this industry.

Typically employers in this industry are involved in mass production for wholesale distribution however may have a centralized processing facility with distribution and sale through related retail outlets. Businesses which have food preparation solely for retail, over the counter sale for immediate consumption, either on site or takeout may be classified in Industry 87501 - Restaurants (e.g. coffee and doughnut shops, ice cream parlours)

Businesses which exclusively sell candy, without a manufacturing component, are classified in industry 69904 - Retail Specialty Stores, Candy and Nut Stores.

Poultry farmers may grade the eggs produced in their own poultry farming business. This is considered part of the farming business when the grading is restricted to the farm's own product. If the grading of the eggs is not restricted to the farmer's own product, a classification is required for the egg grading industry (industry 13100), separate from the farming operations.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2009. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry. In return, the portion of premiums collected to fund retroactive cost relief has been removed from the industry rate, resulting in a reduction in WCB premium rates for the industry.
