Flour Mills

Industry Code: 12400

Compulsory

This industry describes businesses that process grains to produce flours, and includes the related grain handling and seed cleaning activity.

Operation Details:

Flour mills, although involved in grain handling and processing, are generally larger and more involved operations than feed mills and seed cleaning plants. This is due mainly because the end product is for human consumption, and therefore requires greater efforts toward cleanliness and other health considerations in the process.

Initially grains, primarily wheat and rye, are prepared for processing and cleaning through a series of separators and aspirators. The grains are soaked in tempering bins and then various grains are blended for specific makes of flours. Following initial preparation, the grain is ground into coarse particles and passed through a repeated series of sifters, purifiers and reducing rolls to separate bran and produce flour.

Finally, the flour is bleached and enrichments added to complete the mill process. Flour is shipped most often in bulk for wholesale distribution to bakeries or packaged for retail sales.

Underwriting Considerations:

This industry includes the manufacturing of cereal products and the processing of mustard seed into a meal or flour substance, which is eventually bagged.

Businesses which process grains for animal feed and non-human consumption are classified in Feed Mills industry 12301.
