Feed Mills

Industry Code: 12301

Compulsory
Industry Custom Pricing - CR

This activity is performed to produce feed for consumption by animals, primarily farm and ranch animals. This includes both grain processing and production of liquid feeds.

Operation Details:

In grain processing, a grinder or hammer mill may be used to break down or crush the grain, primarily barley. With a hammer mill, small hammers revolving at high speed, force the grain through a screen to break down the kernels. The next step is the mixer where blending of ingredients (a combination of cereal grains, corn, bran, soybean meal, and other meal) and micro-ingredients (a combination consisting of various salts, vitamins and minerals) takes place. When pelletizing is done, the mixture is treated with steam and forced through dies that produce the pellets. Feed product may be bagged, packaged or sold in bulk.

The production of liquid feeds is primarily the blending of concentrates, nutrients and water in large tanks.

Businesses in this industry may also conduct comprehensive retail sales of related and complementary feed and agricultural products.

Underwriting Considerations:

This industry includes businesses which manufacture dry pet foods. Employers in this industry may deliver mixed feed to the farmer.

Industry Custom Pricing: Waiving Cost Relief Option

This industry has chosen to participate in Industry Custom Pricing effective January 1, 2009. Costs related to the aggravation of a pre-existing condition will not be removed from the experience record of employers classified in this industry.
