Dairy/Fruit Juice Processing

Industry Code: 10500

Compulsory

This industry includes the manufacturing of dairy products and the blending and processing of fruit juice.

In the manufacturing of dairy products, raw milk is trucked in from dairy farms and put through various processes with the end products being milk, cream, ice cream, butter and specialty items such as eggnog, buttermilk, etc.

Fruit juice processing uses concentrates, for distribution to various food wholesalers.

Operation Details:

The essential processes for milk and cream are pasteurization (heat process), separation and homogenization (blending). By-products such as ice cream, butter and cottage cheese are blended, fermented, heated, and cooled to achieve the desired result. These processes are highly automated and include the packaging (glass, plastic and waxed cardboard cartons) and distribution of the product on a wholesale basis.

The processing of fruit juice is usually entirely automated. It includes the blending of fruit juice concentrates (generally imported) with water in large stainless steel tanks. The mixed product is then piped to packaging units which fill paper cartons ranging from 131 grams (8 oz.) to 454 milliliter (1 quart). The cartons are automatically sealed and transported by conveyor to a warehouse. Forklifts are used in the warehouse for stocking and loading the product.

The type of workers in this industry may consist of process operators, machine and equipment operators, inspectors, shipping and receiving personnel, maintenance staff, truck drivers, marketing and administrative personnel.
