Industry Code: 10104
This industry covers the operation of rendering plants which process inedible meat by-products into animal feed and tallow. Businesses which purchase and sell raw hides (hide dealers) and treat them with a chemical or salt brine preserve prior to the sale are classified here, as are those which process raw animal hides from cattle or deer and/or skins from fish or reptiles into useable leather of varying colours, textures and grades.
Operation Details:
Whole dead animals and offal (entrails, heart, liver, kidneys, head, and tail) are brought in from farmers, packing plants, supermarkets, cafes, etc. Hides are removed if necessary and the material goes through a guillotine and is cut to 50 lb pieces. Everything is ground up into pea-size pieces and put into rendering cookers. The extracting of fat produces two basic products - one is meat meal which is used as animal food supplement, and the other is tallow which is used in the manufacture of soap and about 200 other products.
Hot tallow is drawn off and the meal drops down as it cooks. The meal is put through a press to remove more tallow and the dry meal goes through a hammer mill where it is ground down to the consistency of sugar and sold in bag or bulk. The tallow collects in large vats where tri-sodium phosphate is added and the tallow sits to settle suspended particles. The tallow is then pumped to large storage tanks for shipment. The largest amount of tallow is exported to other countries.
Workers may consist of skinners, power engineers, plant operators, maintenance, shippers, receivers, drivers, salesmen, office and administration staff.
Raw hides are purchased and sold in local and international marketplaces. Hide dealers will purchase raw hides from various sources including meat processors and farmers. The raw hides are cured to preserve the hide until it reaches the buyer for further processing. Some of the curing processes used include wet brine or salt. Both processes involve the use of large rotating drums to mix the solutions or cure into the hide. The hides are then hung to dry, graded, folded, and stored for sale and shipment.
Tanning is the process of toughening hide or animal skin fibers to an irreversible condition where they will not deteriorate. Most of the work is done by machines with physical labour involving the loading and unloading of machinery as the hide undergoes the various stages of production.
Hides are purchased from meat packaging plants or hide dealers in local and international markets. During the preliminary stages of processing, the hides are fleshed, cleaned and de-haired. Tanning is performed by subjecting the hide to a series of chemical and toughening processes with the use of large rotating drums.
Depending on the intended use of the leather, the hides may go through additional processes involving additional splitting, shaving, colour dying, oiling or conditioning for added softness, or a spray application of a protective coating similar to latex for added durability.
Underwriting Considerations:
The activities of collecting dead animals, hides, offal, etc., are part of this industry when performed in conjunction with a rendering plant or hide dealer.
Meat processing businesses which also engage in curing and selling hides and/or operate rendering facilities in conjunction with the meat processing operations, are underwritten in industry 10100, Meat Processing.
Businesses which manufacture end products from leather may purchase leather in bulk from a tannery or distributor, and are classified in industry 24900. This type of manufacturing involves processes of cutting, stamping and sewing leather into end products such as belts, purses, vests, etc.
Businesses which provide taxidermy services are classified in industry 89916.
